When they are unsuccessful, they feel as if they have to keep gambling just to make ends meet.

The United States Federal government and the states throughout the country levy a lot of taxes on people who live life based on gambling addiction. These taxes are designed to help alleviate the financial strain placed on local municipalities when their casinos are closed by the tax man. Local municipalities must also provide public workers with additional healthcare benefits and better retirement benefits to replace the jobs that were lost when the casinos went out of business.

There is a strong correlation between crime and problem gambling. Gambling addicts often go undiagnosed for a long time, if they are discovered at all. Many who suffer from a gambling problem are not addicted to gambling per se; rather, they suffer from compulsive behavior caused by their reliance on addiction. Many of these problem gamblers will have family members or close friends who are also gamblers. The problem becomes compounded as these people are unable to let go of the addictive behavior because they are required to gamble in order to meet family obligations or fulfill job responsibilities.
